Whilst we now have many Restored Canals on our waterways nationally, proud to say we another brand new canal has opened in the AWCC North West Region, the Liverpool Link.
The first new canal in the north west in modern times was the Ribblelink, giving access to the 40 wonderful miles of the lock free Lancaster Canal. The Lanky has many places of interest, such as the Lune Aqueduct, City of Lancaster, Hest Bank, where you can moor overlooking the sea. You could also take a cruise down the 6 Glasson branch locks, to the Glasson dock, with its sea lock.
Now we have the Liverpool Link, an extra one and a quarter miles at the end of the Leeds Liverpool canal, running through the docks along the waterfront in Liverpool. Passing near to the famous Liver Buildings on the left, and the Pier Head Terminal on the right, where Ocean Going Liners are once again berthing.
From the Liverpool end of the Leeds Liverpool Canal you pass down through the old 4 locks into the docks, then, where you used to turn right to enter the Dock complex, you will now turn left, as the new canal links now links the north and south dock complex. There are two new locks on the link, and a short tunnel. You can then moor near to the Albert Dock Leisure complex which was developed as a tourist attraction some years ago. You will be moored within a reasonable walking distance from Liverpool City centre, with its unique atmosphere, its museums, theatres, etc., so will have plenty to visit in the 14 days BW allow you to stay on the link.
I believe the Liverpool Link was conceived by BW, around the year 2000, and BW and its partners in the project are to be congratulated for completing the project in such a short time scale. As an ex Merchant Seaman, I was saddened to see the Nations Docks become empty and derelict in my lifetime, when not too long ago ocean going ships anchored at the Liverpool bar to await a berth in the docks. So it is good to see some life returning to the docks.
You can book a passage through the Link by contacting BW North West region at Wigan
I believe my information is correct at the time I write, and hope it makes you consider a cruise in the North West.
