The Coombeswood Canal Trust is based at Hawne Basin in Halesowen, the current terminus of the Dudley No 2 Canal, two and three quarter miles from Windmill End Junction and the Netherton Tunnel Branch
Established in 1978 the Trust was formed by a group of enthusiasts from Wolverhampton Boat Club who by leasing Hawne Basin from Dudley MBC sought to revive a derelict Railway Interchange Basin, dating back to 1834. By so doing, the Coombeswood Canal Company as it was then known helped to secure the future of the Dudley No2 Canal and, in particular its route from Windmill End to the canal's terminus at Hawne (Coombeswood ) Basin. The Dudley No 2, currently abandoned beyond Hawne Basin originally meeting the Worcester and Birmingham Canal at Selly Oak, its restoration the aim of the Lapal Canal Trust.
Largely thanks to the efforts of volunteers Hawne Basin was gradually restored and developed over many years, achieving Charitable Trust status with the freehold purchased from Dudley MBC in 2007. The basin now provides moorings for over ninety boats (twelve residential) and offers short term moorings for visitors who receive a warm welcome having ventured down 'the arm' and successfully navigated the notoriously low ( in parts) five hundred yard Gosty Hill tunnel.
Offering all the usual facilities that boaters and other visitors can expect Hawne Basin incorporates an undercover slipway, shop and clubhouse with a bar capable of seating over fifty people in comfort. Anyone can become a member of the Trust (which is affiliated to the AWCC) not just boat owners. The Trust has an active Social Club with many events, film nights, buffet evenings, Sunday lunches and music nights during the autumn and winter months with the Trust hosting an Open Weekend every other year. In so doing the Trust looks to meet its Charitable Aims and Objectives. Namely amongst others, the 'restoration, improvement, enhancement , conservation and restoration of the Dudley No 2 Canal. This for the benefit of the wuder public, with links to the local community enhanced by school visits, the aforementioned Open Days and, for those looking to offer their services, an opportunity to assist the Trust as volunteers.
New members are always welcome with all relevant information on the Trust's website. hawnebasin.org.uk
